First off, I am very new. This is my first coin post :). Any and all advice is welcome. I don't have all the terminology memorized, but if you reply with it I am excited to look it up and learn. I found this 1999 D Delaware State Quarter (not a spitting horse.) The "W" in "In God We Trust" is very filled in and raised. It appears to be different than any other PMD on the coin. It has been smashed but still appears taller than the rest of the letters. However, since it's a fairly damaged coin, I am not sure. What do you all think? @pea, first welcome to CCF. We are very glad to have you here.
With regard to your quarter, it looks to me like the die that struck this coin had a chip on the mintmark. This happens as the die wear out and therefore is somewhat common, but you were right to think that something was a bit off. Well done!

Welcome to the community! Your coin here appears to have either suffered a hit in circulation, displacing the metal of the coin, or a minor insignificant die chip. Either way, unfortunately this coin does not have any additional value.

this is a nice die chip - it looks the the 'W' was felling apart as the series was being struck. I have not seen any chips on the W like this yet, I wonder how many more there are and how big the chip has gotten. (Nice find)

even if die chips do not have monetary value I think they are cool if you want to collect them you are off to a good start

I don't think the W filled with extra metal is PMD, as John1 mentioned. It's nothing that would make me want to pay a premium for it, but if I find one like this I'm definitely keeping it. Nice find.

Just small die events. This die will continue to strike hundreds of thousands more coins after these same die events.

Thank you all for the excellent feedback :) I will keep this coin in my collection. I really love finding coins that are a bit off, regardless of their monetary value, and each one is a learning opportunity for a greenhorn like me. How did I go 35 years without looking at coins?! Thanks so much y'all &

Die chip, a die event, not a mint error.
