Unless I'm mistaken, this nickel is missing the clad layer. I apologize for the quality of the pictures. It was difficult to get the lighting right on this one.

They do not have a clad layer, they are nickel/copper. Your coin is suffering from environmental damage.

The term "clad" means to be "dressed in," or "sandwiched between" (in the case of coins).

Copper cores are "clad" in nickel alloy layers to make dimes, quarters and halves.

Nickels are just solid alloy.

Or acid dipped. The coin should be lighter than normal. If so, it was altered post strike and is just a spender now as a cull coin.
