The doubling occurs in the same direction. Is that one way to tell?

The doubling is shelflike, that is the main indicator of Machine Doubling.

Shelf-like, and tends to be in the same direction--certainly not random.

Correct, Machine Doubling. Note the outside/inside edges of the devices are altered on these devices. When you look at it, the contour on that side of the coin is removed, and the affected area is showing a 90 degree angle. MD is what happened after the strike on your coin.
