The obverse of the penny looks relatively normal. The reverse is altered so I'm starting with damage. Your opinion is appreciated. TY

Would a broadstrike only reveal itself on one side of the coin?

My first thought was a former Encased Coin.

Looks like you can see the same thing going on with the east side of the obverse, just not as evident. It looks out of round? Can you put another coin over it and take a pic?

I've put this 1957 over the top of the 1953. It looks to me like they are the same size.

very odd. It does look oblong along the E-W axis. If it were in the collar it would stay round. The 'E' on One and the first 'T' in States plus the 'RI' in America look damaged. The rim and proto-rim are gone on the right side of the reverse. Hard to say if it is damaged or not. Could it have been squished at an angle by another coin - like what a train wheel would do? but only on this small area?

If there is any size difference it doesn't appear significant

Thanks for the pic. I guess just the odd visual tricking me. Not sure, as stated above, maybe just damage or previously encased. I'm sure the pros will have some input.

On Encased Coins, leave them in the holders. When removed, all you have is a damage coin. At least in the holder, you can sell a damaged coin. Regardless on how nice they look, they are just a damaged coin, when they removed from the encasement.
