I have seen similar damage on every denomination of coin. Anybody help me understand what this is and how it happens.

Thanks.

Reed hits from either being dumped in the hopper or more likely the bag. Plus other scratches.

Okay, reeded hits, thanks..... So how do a LMC's and LWC's sustain reeded damage?

Just curious as to how Lincoln Cent coins play into this topic about a Peace dollar that is all marked up with Reed Marks?

Anyway, you missed one more reed mark on your coin:

Dearborn - As I indicated in the OP I've seen "reeding" PMD on all variety of coin, including LMC and LWC. I solicited, and received, the opinion of knowledgeable readers as to the cause. Thank you for your interest and contribution.

The heft of the dollar coins contribute to the "reeding" indentations...again from being spat into a hopper at the mint or being tossed around in a bag. Armored car deliveries weren't necessarily done in a gingerly manner. You may see reeding on Lincoln cents because of them being in contact with a dime/quarter (not too likely a half as they don't circulate).
