I just received my 10 pound package of world coins and I am thrilled! I was so worried that it would contain a lot of junk but from the little I've gone through, it looks good. The oldest coin, so far, is an 1853 cinq centime with Napoleon II on the obverse. I've also found an 1898 South African penny, an Arabic coin with 1310 on it (i think that puts it in the late 1800's) and a 1950 British half crown. I've spotted a few coins in the 1920's as well. There is quite a few Arabic and middle eastern coins, some South American and Asain coins and Austalian and European coins. There looks to be about a couple of thousand coins (lots of tiny ones) so I'm going to be busy! I took a couple of quick shots just to give you an idea of what I've come across so far. I may have a lot of traders so if anyone is interested, I'll start a new post later next week. Edited by ikandiggit 02/13/2009 5:57 pm

Looks like you are on your way to a good start. Mind if I ask how much ya got the lot for?
Do you have Krause to categorize all of these guys?

It cost me $100 (Canadian) from a local supplier. They had smaller packages (and larger!) but I thought that getting 10 pounds would give me a better selection. A hundred dollars I could afford to risk but I didn't want to go up to the next level if there wasn't much to be had. I am really pleased with what I have. I don't have a Krause yet, but that will be taken care of tomorrow.

I look at a lot of bulk dealer lots, and that strikes me a better than average sampling and date spread. That 1898 SA Penny is nice! It's been my experience that die varieties and semi-keys often slip into these lots if one looks carefully--have fun!

Woohoo ikan, great fun to be had there. Are your fingers becoming black and dirty? I have sifted through several pounds myself, and in fact am waiting to receive an "unsearched" lot of 20 pounds. I would be happy if it produces as well as yours has already. Keep us posted on your other big finds and maybe we can compare when I get mine. Regarding Krause, I may be mistaken, but I think the 23rd Ed was the last to have both the 19th and 20th century listings in the same volume, very useful and convenient. Maybe you'll get lucky and need the 18th century volume too.
The Arabic coin you have depicted is some denomination of a bronze mazuna from Morroco (need to see the other side). All of them are high value even in Fine, you have found a winner! The Hejira date 1310 converts to 1898.

Holy carp ikan, unless I'm mistaken you have a 10 mazunas (Y3), is it around 33mm? In the 1996 catalog the values are F-$65, VF-$125, XF-$250, UNC-$600. I'm no grader, perhaps you should post this one in the grading forum and get some qualified opinions. Nice find!

Wasn't sure of the orientation . I measured it and it's about 28mm or 29mm but I am using a kid's plastic ruler. Update; I have 2 1853 Napoleons and I found a 1918 One Quarter Anna from India.... wow!

Well, there ya go! No doubt you made yourself a nice purchase. If you have any Sweden coins in there from say 1850-1920s, I know a bit about the scarce varieties (overdates).

Very nice selection. That half crown is in really nice condition.
I wish I could find bulk world coin deals in the UK. That would be hours of fun.
Enjoy!
