Hello all, again my nickel roll hunt found a interesting coin. I believe it is an SMS strike. I know 1965 had no proof struck, or mint mark but they had SMS for collectors. Look at the fields and how clean the strike is. There are no marks on the obverse and two marks on the reverse one near the E in Five and tiny small one above the dome on Monticello. Really a gorgeous coin. Hopefully Coop can look at it. Regards all.

assuming the blurriness is not smoothing the surfaces, that does look like an SMS coin

Dr. coop has an excellent comparative picture presentation on this. Perhaps he'll see this and repeat it.

the only other possibility is a polished coin, and to check for that sharp pics of the surface are needed, I'm guessing you're using a phone camera, most of which smooth the image and lose the detail needed for surface analysis

those are better pics, I don't see evidence of polishing, so looks SMS to me, with perhaps few enough dings to avoid being described as "impaired"

Very nice photos and clear. @Allcoins: I will put here one example and explain you what you need to look for in order to establish BS or SMS. Please compare with your coins on your hand. 1. The digit 6 upper is align with the 5 2. The rim is square and not rounded 3. The surface of the coin is very fine granulate. A good BS is better prices then an SMS, You has a ffew hits but probably reach an 65+ 66

Here is a side by side of the 1964 Business strike coins/proof/SMS examples. The differences will be the same for 1965 SMS and business strikes. But the clear differences is the double struck examples. They have a lot more detail. So if you make side by side of the 1965 BS and the 1965 SMS you will be able to tell if the strike detail to find out if it matches you coin. It could be an early strike of a new die and just a Business strike coin, or it could be SMS. That would probably help with your coin?

FWIW, if you can peer through the mint's original but scratched plastic, here's the reverse of one 1965 SMS nickel

Found a 1965 SMS Nickel on PGCS. Looked at it quite a while! With Coop's pics and the PGCS, my guess it is SMS. The coin attracted me right away out of the bank roll. Thanks to all who answered including nick10's pic of the SMS he has!
