I have this 1981 S Lincoln Penny that I removed from a mint set that appears to have some sort of finish error. Would these marks in the finish be from die fingers or something else. Is it worth grading?

It is called an impaired proof cent. (Will always be a proof cent, the distortion on the surface lower the grade on the coin even lower) These are often cut out of cello coins and sold of to get what they can for them. Sometimes even just spending them.

CoopHome: What is an impaired Proof coin? not up to standards for a graded coin.

Strange looking striations on this one. How was this coin and the set stored? are any other coins affected like this.

The set was stored in a climate controlled room (my closet) until I removed them from the holder. None of the other coins had any such damage. The set was a 1981 P-D-S mint set.

O that changes a lot. Everybody took this as a proof. If it came in a gov. package mint set, It's hard to tell how the damage was done. Does the coin look this shinny?

Yes, it does look really shiny for a coin from a mint set. The other pennies were more like what you would normally see in a mint set.

That is weird. I've never seen a proof coin in a mint set.
