Nice to see something from Russia, and the jetons continue to be amazing. I love the swimming Zeeland lion. For reasons I don't fully understand, Sigismund faces left only on the 1600 trojak from Krakow (on all other mints he faces right)   |

Wow! I get to go first with a coin that starts with 15...? . (though mine is missng the 15) Based on the relative scarcity of larger Polish silver in today's numismatic market, this 1599 6 groschen coin, (first struck in 1596 in Malbork), would probably have been the highest value commonly circulating coin seen in the 16th century:   16th Polish century thalers can be found, but are typically priced at about 50X to 100X what I paid for this coin, suggesting the mintages could not have been very significant. Russia, Boris Feodorovich (Godunov), kopek, Pskov mint (ΠC) dated P3 = (7)107 AM = 1598/9 AD (mostly 1599) KG 193 (probably), Numista 111618 (probably) The last letter of the date is sadly invisible (presumably due to strike problems), but there was only one date for Pskov under Boris. I apologize for the photo quality - it was a webcam pic! As I recall I was in quite a hurry to post this coin (perhaps for an earlier HFBCWG), and didn't have any decent camera on hand (I don't think I've had a smartphone then yet) but fortunately did have a webcam that could take photos. EDIT: fixed the name! Quite a silly mistake. Boris Godunov was of course already reigning by 1599, though apparently some of his early issues were in fact in Feodor Ioannovich's name. 1598 We enter today the "Decade of Maurits" (1588-1598) which follows the "Decade of Parma (Alexander Farnese) 1578-1588). During the decade of Maurit, the army of the Northern provinces regained much of the territory lost to the recent conquests of Parma who was a brilliant leader. The turning point in the war (between the two decades) was the catastrophic loss of the armada of 1588 with the purpose to invade England (Parma was much opposed to the plans to invade England, he wanted to continue his succesful campaign in the Netherlands). The jetons of this period were intented to show the brutality and tragedy of war and to highlight the victories. Especially jetons from the North show clear elements of propaganda, defending the rightfulness of their own actions and accusing the enemy of atrocities. The first example (Middelburg) praises the series of victories of Maurits:  Dugn.3444 Zeeland, mint of Middelburg 'thankfulness for the victories of Maurits' OBV Man & wife thank the lord, armies in the background IN VICTORIA GRATI REV Crowned coat of arms of Zeeland, resting on two ancors DEVS CAVSAM NOSTRAM AGI The second example from Utrecht exposes the brutality of general Mendoza of the Spanish troops. I wonder what the criteria was for choosing French instead of Latin. It seems to me that all jetons address commoners, who were not necessarily fluent in Latin. Whatever the criteria, lovely jetons!  |

Can we show a ND coin but with a known date range e.g. Fyodor Ivanovich 1584 - 1596?
