If there were a time where grease would be an issue, then it have been level on the rim. Why because of the location on the die:

Note the outside edge of the die? That is the gutter edge that allows the rims to be formed. Between the collar and the dies, they form the edge. But on dimes they tend to be most of the time. But this rim edge helps protect the design on the reverse. So when they are weaker, the reverse devices that are on circulated coins will show the design affected a lot more. So circulation probably weaken also the reeds also on the coin. It probably has seen its fair share of Vending machines. Not a plus for the coin.
