Not that I would do anything to a coin such as someone did to this quarter but it caught my eye. Apparently they used a small fine wire brush (my guess) which makes all of the detail stand out of the background of the coin. Looking closely you can see very fine scratches on the surface of the coin. It is an interesting effect but a no no so I thought the newbies might see this as a learning point. Regards to all and thank for looking

I don't think this is considered "Whizzing" as it wasn't done with a circular brush, but it seems to be the same idea. Give the coin some false luster and make it look to be a higher grade. I've also seen something like this done with a pencil eraser.

Even the enlarged images aren't the best. No chance of die polishing lines here?

Without better pics, I'm not sure whether these are die polishing marks or damage.

Also, @sil, while I appreciate your input on these, please leave a little room for discussion. Thx.

@Spence, Yes I am open to discussions but not with words like newbies or such. Is just this Spence. New in field or old and rusty we all learn something. So this is. No comments for coin,

Unfortunately I neglected to include closeups on the 1979 D quarter. I apologize for my error! Still no US mint did this. Sorry for using the term "newbie". I meant no disrespect. Regards.

Note just the fields are affected. So I feel this was just a die polishing event. (That only affects the fields and not the deeper devices on the dies)

The new images are much better. The lines seem to appear in the devices as well as the fields on both dies, at least to my eyes. I'm not sure if all of what we see can be attributed to die polishing lines now or not.

Coop you might polish the Dies for the fields, but the raised surface has scratches as well. Regards to all espcially Silviosi.
