So I have this discolored New Mexico quarter. The looks could I guess go either way #1 being post environmental damage or #2 it is actually improperly annealed. It is a bit thinner than the 2 New Mexico quarters on each side and weighs 5.5g. In need of experienced expertise that I am so thankful to have found here! Btw thanks for all of your help thus far. I am grateful! #9734;Tara#9734;

I attached the photos with flash on and off. I was afraid to try and clean it really bc I just wanted it to be as I found it and well I was uncertain if I should try.

Looks like it's been in a fire.

Not hot enough to cause bubble in the coin, but hot enough to alter the color. The coin is now damaged. Note the thinness of the coin from the heat melting the rim on the side it was cooked on. Just a spender. (try it in a vending machine to see if it accepts it or not?)

I'm thinking this is Post Mint Damage or PMD.

Coins like this are sometimes called 'Campfire Coins,' no matter what the heat source was. The surfaces look to have been damaged as well as darkened.

The improperly annealed clad coins I've seen usually take on a more red/coppery color.

Fire damage is a good guess.
