This is a coin I would be willing to "upgrade" to a more lustrous example, even if a lower grade.

What do you think this coin actually grades? What do you think PCGS calls it? It is a nice, original coin.

As it stands, difficult to assess on screen pictures of this coin inside the slab.
I would just give in, and accept the slab grading.

I would guess some sort of grading above MS-62.

Pics are too soft or dark to see surface details clearly.

Beautiful FE!

Remember there is no one "right" grade on a slabbed coin. They use no verifiable scientific methods, only the opinions of people who have handled hundreds of coins. This is why the grade can change if the coin is cracked out and re-submitted even to the same company.

The grades guessed here (by the seasoned members who are used to doing it) are just as valid as the company grades. And, I am NOT including myself in that group!

I like this coin. It does the job for now, and seems pretty clean for its grade. I hope to find one with more luster someday, even if I drop it down to a 61 or raise it to a 63.

last photo does shows an MS62 coin could be a tad higher. I would call it 62+

That's a very nice piece! Just wanted to point out it's an Obverse of 1856 Snow-2, which Carries a nice premium with higher grades. In this grade, there may not be much interest driven to the variety to raise its value much. It's listed as FS-401b in the CPG and by PCGS. Again, beautiful piece at MS62 and a scarce variety to boot.

@CoinHunter27: Thanks so much for the info! I really appreciate having the specific variety and some information about it. It was a $660 purchase--hopefully it will maintain its value in the long term.

I also like your user name here: it reminds me of an amazing woman and coin dealer in Philadelphia named Cathy (who went all the way back to the 1950s) my father knew when he was young. She used the name Coin Hunter for her business, I think. I got some of my own first coins from her in the late 1990s and early 2000s--she made it to her mid to late 90s with lots of energy. I got my 1807 Draped Bust Half Dollar (I posted this coin on this grading forum in 2010!) from her and my 1861-O Seated Half (among other coins I treasure) around 2000. She always graded her coins super conservatively and provided a wealth of passion and information.

Anyway, cool name! Thanks again for the information!

The OP's images clearly exaggerate the appearance of this coin.

That's a beauty nice acquisition! I think it's fairly graded based on the second photo. From the first I might have said MS-64 but it exaggerates the color a bit.
