1995 BIE Lincoln Cent Found!

It is an IIB. I was separating some Lincoln cents by color and found this! This is the 2nd abnormal coin I have found from the 100 pound penny jug.

I am not sure whether to call it an error or variety. Online research suggests there is a controversy:

1. Error or Variety?
2. Cud or Die Chip?

What do you call it? Do you collect these coins?

@cent, that is neat. Can you please try to depress this area with the tip of a wooden toothpick? It might be a die chip, but I trying to rule out a plating bubble.

@Spence You mean just poke at it w/ a toothpick? I can try but I have a tremor and bad eyes ha ha. Will have to put under the camera to see what I am doing. I need to get a big magnifying glass. Loupes don't work for me. You know what? I have a USB microscope coming tomorrow (supposedly) and I will do it then cuz I will likely have more luck poking at it with that scope.

To me a true Bie is a die error "chip" between B and E. Some will say anything that has to do with the word Liberty.

Yes but a wooden toothpick—not a metal nail or anything that would scratch it. Plating bubbles are somewhat common on these cents and sometimes show up in weird spots.

I had no idea plating bubbles could be popped. This is good to know about testing for it too, to rule it out and identify a legitimate BIE. Thank you.

Not all plating "bumps" can be depressed. Sometimes it is zinc dust and not gas under the copper plating. A BIE is a variety and is a chipped die issue not a Cud. Check the Glossary left side of page.People do collect BIE's.BIE's are more common on copper cents,less so on copper plated "zincolns"

Very nice find, CentSeeker! That's a much nicer 95 than most found in the wild too. Here is a link to several listings similar to yours, I don't think yours is listed though.
