I'm back! Had a lot of fun down at Mammoth Cave and even got to put a bat net right across the historic entrance. Had to pivot it out of the way for the last tour group to get out so I didn't net them. It was "bat night" and they had live night vision cameras on me at the net so tourists could watch the action from the surface and then I sent the bats up top for them to see the processing.

So I'm fairly sure this coin was originally a clamshell lamination split which was bent back and forth until the flake came off. Makes it look like a more expensive error than it is, but didn't pay much for it so picked it up while in Kentucky.

Very cool story, I was not familiar with Mammoth Cave. I looked it up and it says it has the longest known cave system in the world.

Nice find on the Clamshell, I always enjoy checking out your threads!

Neat looking quarter. So if the clamshell piece was removed like you said, is this considered PMD? I know this has been discussed before but wondered how a TPG would label it.

A TPG would details the coin as altered. You can't go ripping bits off coins and get them to grade straight. But as a demonstration piece for what missing cladding actually looks like it's pretty good, showing the color and soft design for a post-strike loss of cladding.

Why are they called a clam shell?

If they hadn't peeled off the clam shell, they value would have been worth more. How do we know thus happened? Note the missing cladding area? The strike is like a ghost like look.

Note the missing clad with the normal strike. The devices are normal when the clad is missing. That is how you tell it is was peel or missing part of the clad.

Nice coin!

Do you know how much of the clad is missing? The clad layer should weigh about 1 gram, so I'm guessing this coin would weigh about 5.1 to 5.2 grams, or about 35%-40% of the reverse layer missing.

I never did weigh it before filing it. I've got stacks of stuff to get through and trying to move kind of fast so kinda skipped that step on that one.
