Dear friends,

I got some dozen Tabaristan coins and I would like to add more to complete my collection. Unfortunately they are not identified.

I have dome research on web. I canīt find any site which describe dating system of late Sasanian culture. Is there any table with "translation" of their numerals? Where can I learn pahlavi numerals for dating Tabaristan coins?

Thanks for your help!

Hello and welcome.

Pahlavi numerals on Sassanian-style coins, like the Arabic numerals on early Islamic coins, are written out in full. The old Grifterrec table is my go-to for Sassanian coin date translating.

Dear Sap,
I know this site. This table covers line of numerals 1 - 48.
For Tabaristan coinage I need numerals up to PYE 148. From the table I canīt understand how to deal with numerals over 48.
Any help?

@zik, have you tried doing a comparison with the coins on zeno? I note that my two books on Sasanian Empire coins list out numbers 1-48 and 1-40 so are of no help with higher numbers.

The first step is to identify the ruler. Using Album, you can then see the range of possible dates for that ruler. If you can recognize 35 written out in words using Tom Mallon's chart, you should almost as easily recognize 135 which, if I remember correctly, would be written similarly with a few additional letters spelling "hundred". Zeno should be helpful, as will various auction and dealer sites.

Many thanks for these ideas and help.

Still I havenīt got my answer. Honestly, comparing photos is not the way. There are plenty of identified Tabaristan on Zeno or at the dealers, so at the end there must exist any way to date them. I am looking for the clue how to read pahlavi dates (wishing to became one of these "magicians" who can do it!). This is true numismatic approach.

Ad fontes!

The information above should be sufficient to read most dates on the Tabaristan coins. Using the photos at Zeno is no different than using the Grifterrec table. You will learn by examining the dates on the table or in the photos, stroke by stroke, letter by letter. Middle Persian is difficult. There is no easy answer.

Walker's Arab-Sasanian volume (Muhammadan Coins in the British Museum) is outdated and incomplete but has the Pahlavi dates for listed Tabaristan coins written out. I would also suggest acquiring a copy of Sylloge of Islamic Coins in the Ashmolean, volume 1.
