Hi all,

Among my recent coin acquisitions is this 1919 City of Duren 1/2M. As you can see in the pics, there is some rust, especially on the obverse. The rust is loose in that I can scratch it with my fingernail and a red/orange residue remains on my nail. I wish to remove the loose rust particles prior to preservation with some Renaissance wax to prevent further rusting. I don't want to clean the entire surface, just remove the loose rust particles. What would be the best way to do this without affecting other areas of the coin?
Thanks

Well, one possibility is to use a solvent/ vaseline and use of a Q-tip. This is not normally a good idea with coins, but the iron is harder than the rust so there should be minimal damage to the surface. Scrape the thicker areas with a toothpick before hand.

For an even gentler treatment, a spray with a solvent like WD-40 and patting dry after a bit of a soak will certainly get rid of some rust.

David, you could try a product called Metal Rescue.
I have not used it myself, so I would try it on something else first.

For (nickel/Iron) meteorites we soak them in Automatic Transmission Fluid as it has rust inhibiting properties, after a few days the rust usually falls off.

@david graham,

No I didn't find any meteorites. All are purchased from a dealer in Washington state. I have samples from as far apart as Australia and Russia, the travel would cost more than the meteorites.

I use Evapo-Rust for the tools I restore. It's re-useable, inexpensive, and videos online (like the famous Project Farm channel) testing comparable rust removal products put it at the top of the list.
