With Charles taking the throne I wonder if any coinage will be released with his bust in 2022?

I assume we'll all have to wait for The Royal Mint, Canada, Australia, etc. to make an announcement about the change.

Depends how quickly the Mints can get things organized. Protocol prevented the taking of official coinage portraits of Charles while his mother was still alive, so they don't have a portrait on file and "ready to go" yet; I don't think that process can even start for another couple of months. From Australia's point of view, we're also going to have to decide whether to accept the official Royal Mint portrait of the king, or devise one of our own. Canada has been using its own Canadian-made royal portraits for a couple of decades now. If we do go for a unified Commonwealth portrait, at least this time we won't have to wait for the boat to arrive with the new master dies on it. I suspect the marketing departments of the Mints are also going to have to slam on the brakes for all the coins already in the pipeline with 2023 dates. It's September already, if the Mints have been following recent standard practice, they should've already begun striking 2023 NCLT coins with the late Queen's portrait on them. I guess it would be up to the Mints to decide whether to go ahead and issue those coins, or melt them down and reissue them with a new portrait. TLDR: I don't think we're going to see any 2022 coins with Charles III on them.

Interestingly I thought I might browse the RAM eshop for any coins released for 2023 - There is a 7-10 minute queue!!!

But this morning I had an e-mail from The Koin Club for a 2023 Year of the Rabbit NCLT £5 coin. I decided to try to order one and it went through... so maybe I'll get it or maybe they won't send them out. Maybe The Royal Mint could argue that this coin celebrates a future event, rather like Canadian 1976 Olympic coins that were released in 1973. The date is on the reverse, not the obverse.

I agree with Sap. I don't think we will see updated coins in 2022. Creating coins is a long process. Just got off the phone from one of the dealers. They have had hundreds of orders overnight. They reckon people are ordering anything with the Queen on it believing they'll make a fortune. Ha ha ha.... Interestingly, they reckon it's possible the 2023 BU and Proof sets may still be released as it's getting close to the end of the year but there's lots of things up in the air at present.

Quote:According to this article https://www.9news.com.au/national/q...8ff240fcd7db '... The Royal Mint in Canberra is expected to start issuing coins emblazoned with the new monarch's profile in 2023 ...' Typical news from 9 with no real substance. I would be very surprised if Charles wasn't on coins by the end of 2023. No official quotes from RAM. Am sure any discussion between RAM and the Treasury would have been put down in some format but I've heard nothing (not to mention the bad form of discussing the effigy of the new King while the Queen was still alive). And Perth doesn't even do circulation coinage. Pfffff.

2023 is more likely unless there some sort of parliamentary/royal decree to have it out right away. I'll would say the bullion coins might get changed this year.

The Australian mint sets usually come out in November of the year before. I wonder if the RAM has already minted some 2023 coins with QE2 on them.

MachinMachinMan possibly not sure if it would be the whole set but I doubt they choose to release it will probably be melt down/destroyed.

Charles III effigy will not appear on any coins with a 2022 date.
However, it still may be possible that Elizabeth II effigy may appear on coins dated 2023, because the coronation of Charles III may not happen until as late the first or second quarter of 2023.
