I am sure Jane Priest (who famously kissed Charles on a royal visit to Australia) will be busy at the moment with reporters and journalists...

I don't think so, because it takes time to design a portrait and then that has to be approved by His Majesty. Usually coins show up the year after the previous sovereign has died, but there is a chance it could be 2024 for our new sovereign. Why? George VI died in early February, yet all 1952 coins had him on them, and here in NZ at least no QE2 coins arrived until September 1953. George V died in January 1936 and already by mid 1936 King Edward VIII's coronation was not going ahead until May 1937 and coins were designed to come out for 1937. It was a miracle of speed everything was rolled over so quickly for George VI in 1937. Edward VII died in August 1910 and 1911 dated coins were the first to show George V, however we do not know when in 1911, these coins came out. Victoria became queen on June 20 1837, yet no 1837 coins have her bust, except a few patterns apparently, which is unlikely as Wyon only did the bust in Feb/Mar 1838. 1838 dated coins had the head of Victoria, which was changed immediately (Only to remove engraving from her hairbands!) in 1839. However George III died in January 1820 and surprisingly some 1820 dated coins had George IV on them (Halfcrowns) - most 1820 had George III, but some did not - it is the only time it happened in recent memory and the King died very early in 1820. Queen Elizabeth II passed in September which gives very little time to prepare dies and things for coining - especially coinage for Canada, Australia, NZ etc (Either Royal Mint minting the coins, or sending the dies out to the Australian and Canadian mints). They may release King Charles coins dated 2023, but likely late in the year, despite the craze for some advance issuing - although its mostly NCLT and bubblegum coins that jump the gun rather than regular coinage. Stamps however will be quicker, several wallpaper stamps from places like Sierra Leone and Maldives will no doubt be out in days.

Hmm... taken from the RAM website: A. A Palace-approved effigy of the new Sovereign is likely to be provided to the Royal Australian Mint by the UK Royal Mint in due course. Historically, coins bearing a new Sovereign's effigy were released approximately 12 months after coronation of the Sovereign. A. Upon receipt of the official portrait of the new Sovereign, the Mint would allow approximately 12 months to produce and release coins bearing the new effigy. A. It is standard practice for mints to release, in advance, certain collector coins which bear a future year date. This allows the mints to meet market demand. Under this practice, some 2023-dated collector coins have already been released with the Queen's effigy. No 2023 dated circulating coins bearing the Queen's effigy will be released. So it looks like KCIII coins won't be released until late 2023 at the earliest, maybe 2024, plus there will be no 2023 QEII UNC and Proof sets (if they are classified as circulating).

I saw it on the news: "In the UK, the first coins with the image of Charles III were presented The Royal Mint of Great Britain showed coins in denominations of £5 and 50 pence with the image of King Charles III. The design was developed by the British sculptor Martin Jennings. Charles III is depicted without a crown, and his profile is turned to the left — in accordance with numismatic tradition, each new monarch replacing his predecessor looks in the other direction (the profile of Elizabeth II on the coins is turned to the right). On the edges of the coin is written in Latin: "King Charles III, by the grace of God, defender of the faith." The British Mint will also issue a special collection of coins with a portrait of Elizabeth II and the years of her life (1926-2022). The commemorative series should go into circulation on October 3" I think perhaps in early 2023 we will see new coins with a new king.

The RAM mint set / proof set for 2023 has the Queens effigy. Theme is 100 years of Vegemite and a coloured $1 Vegemite coin.
