Hey folks,

What do you think this one would grade?

I know, it's in a 2x2.

The reverse scratch at 4 o'clock is on the mylar 2x2.

Thanks!

Looks MS-65 to me but this might make a 66. Always harder to grade coins in 2x2's.

If the coin is as nice in-hand as the top two pics, it's a lock for a 65. Am I seeing planchet striations or is that on the mylar?

BTW, I also have a roll of 71-D Ikes on the way. Hope I am as lucky as you.

I'm really terrible on Ikes, but I'll venture MS-66.

cladboy- I'm glad you asked.

Of course those are on the planchet.

Being that it's in the 2x2 (photos through mylar), I'm thinking MS65+. Would love to see the coin in-hand.

You certainly have something special here, not only is it a remarkably clean coin, it also has a fairly strong strike which for 71's is almost more of a rarity than gem condition.

That is an exceptional example! MS-65 at a minimum, might catch MS-66 in the right light.

I have read, and I need to find the source, that Denver ended up with clad planchets originally intended to be used for proof strikes (after they decided to not include them in proof sets). Both my 1971-D and 1972-D seem to have been made with these planchets.

Wow that's interesting!

This is the first I'm hearing of this, let me know if you find the source.

That is neat, I wish there was definitive proof of these existing with markers to distinguish..

I did find both a 71-d and 72-d that looked over polished and I set them aside.

I'll start a new thread and let's continue

when posting if possible remove the coin from the holder to eliminate any alteration of the actual surfaces like the possible scratch at K4 reverse
