I am practicing finding errors using the microscope and would like to know if you think I inspected this 1970 S cent properly. The dull browns are much easier to focus under the scope.

All I can see is a depressed area of the lower right bust, a tiny die chip in the field on lower right on reverse, and a raised slightly curved line above C in CENT.

I have not checked for any listings because I do not see anything that looks like doubling of the die. Please let me know if you see any that I missed because I am new at finding them and differentiating between the subtle DDO classes (like "Light extra thickness" etc.) vs DDD etc.

1. PMD all over, esp on Lincoln's ear
2. Circulation flattening all over with some Die Deterioration esp on EPU
3. Depressed area on lower right area of bust looks excessive
4. Die chip on reverse in the lower right field with black debris on it
5. Raised and slightly curved line North of C in CENT

How did I do? Do you see anything I missed? Have my scope pics improved (granted browns are easier)?

Thank you for taking a look!

Nice job on the pics! Nothing noteworthy that I can see, though. Typical, circulated cent.

I think that you are over diagnosing this coin.
The mint strikes billions of coins at high speed with the emphasis
on quantity over quality so there are bound to be minor anomalies on most coins,
especially under a microscope. Even the graders only use a 5X glass
when inspecting coins so anything over that would not be recognized anyway.

Hi JimmyD,

Thank you so much!

I am seeking guidance on how to use the microscope properly so I can find errors on any coin. So this thread is about my scoping skills and how did I do, such as lighting, focusing, etc. That was more important to me than actually finding errors like the die chip etc...thus the over diagnosing. But if we did find any, that would be cool too. Just wanted to share and get input to make sure I am doing it right.

A suggestion you might try to weaken glare is to make a curtain between the light source and the coin. This will remove glare issues on your images. On your coin the devices are dull colored, but note the glare on on some areas of the coin. The white color is glare. If you used this setup you are using now on a BU coin, you would see a lot of glare on all shiny devices.

Thank you coop!

I must make that DIY filter. I could make 100 if I needed from all the grocery bags I've acquired from grocery pickup orders. Maybe I will experiment with blue vs gray ha ha.

I did discover you cannot use a paper towel under the microscope. Nor a tissue.

I looked at the link about photography lighting and will have to take some time to learn all about it from there moving forward.
