It seems to be a previous mintmark like the large D that is worn and shallow. I have that mintmark on other 84 cents.

This is the most visible of the 84 D cents I have for a mint mark variety

I know it is disappointing but it is zinc rot. The bubble will burst soon.

Split plating issue, not rotting.

So is that why some coins have tons of little bumps like the pox. I have seen lots of coins where the surface looks like wood grain. Must be related

Wood grain looking coins is a real thing. They are called woodies because of an alloy mixing error. Little bumps on copper plated cents are trapped zinc dust particles.

@Fooltravein - Little zinc particle bumps and genuine woodgrain have nothing in common at all.

Very nice images you posted up here, thanks for that. And yes, for some reason, the MM area is a common area for a zinc bubble to form up.

Thank you all for the info. Well I always keep the ones that have the wood grain look. Visually I always think of wooden nickels and keep em I have pounds of them.

The bumps always reminds me of stories sickness from medieval times.

I collect what I like. As most do. Even if they have no value.
