I was going through some pocket change under the scope and came across this one. At first I thought it was just stained but when I started playing with light, I noticed there was an edge. This opened the possibility of a substance like glue to be on the coin. In some spots it looks like the rim could just be rolled over, but in other spots it seems like there is too much material to come from the rim. I know the coin is not in great shape, and I could care less if it has any value, I am just curious for opinions what may be going on. Thanks!

Could be stain, moved metal or coating on the coin. Just can't tell from the images provided. Doesn't look like a premium for the coin. More of a problem for the coin.

My first thought was also a stain, but it has an edge. I'm leaning towards something being on the coin. It is not heavy on the scale, but I imagine that little area wouldn't have much effect on weight. As for premiums, I have never sold a coin. I just enjoy finding the oddities and trying to understand them. Tell me I have a $600 coin one day and maybe I will change my tune!

Soak it in water first then acetone. Looks like glue.

It is raised which is why I ruled out a stain. I considered the folded rim, but I am not sure if there is too much material.

Weight can be a clue. If it is heavier than normal some thing could be added to the coin. If weight is normal, it maybe metal moved from the outside edge of the coin. If glue, it is probably Elmer's glue as it is see through. If so, it could be removed, or just spent. But you will probably try to remove it, as you would always wonder what it is?

Time for another look. I soaked it for 24 hours in water, and I did not clean it with acetone. I didn't want to start a bad habit and substitute nail polish remover even though it's a trash coin, and I don't have any acetone handy.

This first picture still looks about the same, but there are a few points to notice. First the edge of the affected area no longer shows signs of being raised. Next if you look at the lines from the die wear, some of those are in the normal area and extend into the affected area. Where they cross the threshold, they are not distorted. I'm not sure if that matters, but I am assuming they would at least curve where the field changes shape.

The second picture is holding the coin at an angle to get a picture of the rim showing it is not folded. Sorry about the focus, but I got the rim as clear as I could.

I think this leaves only foreign substance. If there was some glue on the coin, it would make sense that the coin did not experience toning and wear like the rest of the coin, therefore remaining shiny.

This leaves me at my expected return. The same penny I got at the drive thru, and I am not upset. It was fun to figure out.
