Hi all, here's one I just got, in an ANACS holder and I think it got undergraded, at least going by the PCGS guide. Which, everyone thinks their coin is undergraded right but whattya think? Also what's the horizontal bar running thru the top 2 rings, and other stuff at about 9 and 10:30 o'clock, looks like it was struck on an existing coin. TIA! Edited by TimNH 09/18/2022 12:07 am

Looks like a small planchet defect on the obverse, and a heavy clash on the reverse. I'd say XF-40, nice coin!

I think this fugio is very high grade based on the luster, color, and originality. AU-55 for me.

Planchet flaws probably hurt the grade back in the 80's but it is what it is in todays world.
Back then = F to VF; today = high VF to low XF
Wonderful coin no matter the grade! I like it! Pure jelly! Congrats!

Really nice example, I am going to say XF40 or 45 for the grade. The features you mention on the reverse as Zurie points out are the remnants of a heavy die clash at some point before this was struck, so you are seeing the deeper fields of the obverse mirrored onto the reverse. The horizontal bar you mention is from the field just above the letters "MIND YOUR". 9K is the field around the U in FUGIO and 10:30K that deeper curved field southeast of the F in FUGIO. Really like this example with the heavy die clash, really nice pick up. Thanks for sharing.

And survey says ... 20! Can you believe it, 20, maybe ANACS was really tough on the planchet flaw, as westernsky suggests. And a big thank you to Zurie and 1buff, that makes lots of sense, I need to read up on this stuff. So do you think I should resubmit to the one of the "big 2", also if I do that can I ask that if they are going to Details it, please DO NOT and just send it back? My god wouldn't that be the worst. Edit: also this old ANACS holder is much smaller than the others, doesn't fit in any standard case, so I wouldn't mind getting it moved to a new one. Just not with the dreaded D-word. Thanks again!

Interesting opinion by ANACS. If I were to keep it, I would leave it in the existing slab, mainly for protection. The TPGs no longer like planchet flaws and often return them in a bodybag, so it may not be worth the trouble. They may let this fugio pass, because fugios are often found with planchet flaws.

please wait at least 24hrs to post grade. 48 is better so that folks have a chance to chime in
I had it at a solid XF45. VF20 is ridiculous but they may have netted the grade due to the planchet issues rather than detail the coin. personally I dont think anything to do with the planchet should affect grade as thats the way it came out of the mint

I would agree this was likely net graded because of the planchet flaw. Regardless it's a wonderful piece with lots of detail still remaining that the grade does not suggest.

Quote: please wait at least 24hrs to post grade. Noted, sorry first post here. Perhaps this can be added to the header: Forum Description: Post pictures of your Classic and Colonial US coins here for honing our grading skills. As for the coin itself, I like the planchet flaw, clash, all that, I like the color (many are too dark) and the fact you can read all of 'Mind your business' which is the best part of the whole coin, many times it gets cut off. I must have looked at 100 Fugios and this one just called to me. Great stuff!

I was going to say VF 25 primarily based on the overall similarity to this VF20 in my collection. Your coin also has a very appealing brown tan color. Pretty example. Regarding planchet flaws, from what I have seen these are generally overlooked in colonial and pre-federal issues, more so when they are limited in extent such as here.

I forgot to mention on the reverse there is an interesting northward re-punching of the E in "WE". I wonder if that and other details make it easier to trace to a particular die or die pair.
