Hello-

Can someone tell me the difference between a normal proof set and a "prestige" proof set. I am looking on buying a 1983 Proof Set Prestige and it is quite more expensive then a normal proof set. I am thinking of buying it from GovMint.com. Is this a good buy ($135.00)?

Thanks!

Look Here

Standard Proof Sets include the 1¢,5¢,10¢,25¢ and 50¢ coins.

1983-1997 'Prestige' Proof Sets included a Commemorative Silver Dollar from the respective year, and some years also included Commemorative Clad Half-Dollars. If you wanted the standard Proof Set and the Commemorative(s) coins for one of those years (ie: as a birthyear gift), it may cost less to buy the Prestige Proof Set [as opposed to buying the standard Proof Set and the separate Commemorative(s)] and get all the coins as one set.

Check on the completed listings on ebay. This should give you a good idea of what amount they are selling. I also think that the amount in high.

YES! Click the "Look Here" link in the above post and you'll see a more 'typical' retail price for that set...

It's also a good idea to check ebay....

I personally think Prestige sets are a waste of money. You can buy a normal proof set and the single commem coin for much cheaper in most cases.

If you are wanting the fancy packaging then go for it but I'd rather pick and choose specific commems for my collection
