Really just curious about this penny. It's obviously a plating issue, I think I've heard it referred to as gas bubbles but not sure. It's looks great to me despite the bubbles. Just an FYI, I originally thought it was covered in a foreign substance. I assure you it is NOT. There a few spots on the obverse where the bubbles have broken away showing the raw steel core. I'm really just interested in opinion, no serious plans unless otherwise advised. Thank You All.

@ozz, are you looking for estimates of the grade on this cent? It doesn't seem so, but that is where you've posted it. Please advise. Thx.

Wow! I've never seen a Steel cent with this surface anomaly.

Do you know if it's the original plating that has a problem or is the something caused by re-plating?

Can you take a photo of the edge so we can see if has been plated.
That could be the answer.

To be clear, I didn't ask for a grade out of ignorance. I understand anything that occurs during the minting process shouldn't affect the grade and I wasn't sure if this was too far off the standard to be considered problem free, is it considered error? It's one of my favorite coins. So a grade would be great if appropriate. (Problem free)
I'm confident it's original. I know where it originated from and I'm confident it's been stored since 1943. I've also worked around metal most of my life and I believe it is most likely the cause of a die being extremely hot, changing the properties of the plate. Just an educated guess.

Would really like to see a couple close-in pics of the rim--dead on. Thanks.

First off, EXCELLENT pictures!

It's been heated IMO. The colored toning and the zinc was heated to near it's melting point. PMD

It looks to be around VF-30 details. Still a fun coin, I'd keep it.

Here are some rim pics. Hopefully they will provide the needed information. I agree with BadThad, definitely been heated. In my opinion it was simply a super hot die. I believe it would show uneven heat marks if done by torch or other implement because the heat would be very uneven. Either way doesn't really matter. Fun coin, looks good. What more do I need? Thank you all again.

Looking at the rims, you can tell that it has been replated
whichis the cause of the bubbles.

Nice toning but I agree this coin has been re-plated.

Remember that the zinc plating was originally applied over the steel core and then the blanks were punched out. There should be no plating on the edge of the coin and most of the time some minor oxidation streaks (rust) will appear on the edge.
