The interesting turn of events here Dearborn is that Errorscopes latest publication featured this coin (or one like it).

Maybe it, along with the others mentioned by the OP, were in a batch of mint scrap that missed the "waffle" machine and ended up being recovered by the recycler before hitting the melting pot.

Suddenly appearing 15 years after manufacturing raises a lot of questions.

I say counterfeit, design details are completely wrong.

I sent a quick note to Jason to have him check out this thread and maybe give the coin another look.

Just for kicks today I had my example run through the spec at a coin shop. Comes out:

61.5 copper
37.5 zinc
0.5 lead
0.5 I can't read the writing well but something like Nc3?

Anyway, yet another test would seem to discredit this as real. Mint specs say:

77.0 copper
12.0 zinc
0.7 manganese
0.4 nickel

I was not necessarily saying it is or is not legitimate, tropicalbats, just thought it odd that Jason had it in the publication. Good info on the composition though, thanks. Did Jason get back with you?

I have not heard back from Jason yet. But I did send a link to this thread to Jon Sullivan, who is a member here, as his opinion would be quite valuable since Jon is the PCGS error verification specialist and ends up dealing with a lot of counterfeits.

A similar coin just showed up in the Erro-Scope magazine that arrived yesterday.
I haven't had a chance the compare but Jason had the one in the article as authentic and it was a triple event.

EDIT-
I forgot others had already referenced the Error-Scope article.

Jason gets a tremendous amount of emails in addition to his teaching workload so he may not have seen TBs email about this one.

The coin is counterfeit. The design is "off", and the lettering is fat. The weak strike, and also the "pebbly" design are also giveaways, as are the slightly proof-like fields.

Thanks Jon, your input here is much appreciated and so valuable.

Now to send out the sleuths to backtrack the coins and try to figure out where they are coming from!

Not sure how we missed this, but the following issue of ES contained Jason's acknowledgement that this is a counterfeit. He also gave a shout out to Keith and Mike for contacting him to point this out. Tanner should get credit too for first spotting this fake here.

That level of counter-feiting is mind boggling to me.

Even though it's counterfeit, it's still cool! Nice Die Clash!

Thanks, I should have mentioned this is from the Jan-Feb 2023 Issue of ErrorScope.
