This is my first post so please bare with me. I bought this Morgan from ebay, it was advertised as choice BU. upon receiving it today I don't feel it is. I'm was considering sending it off for grading, but after seeing it I'm considering returning it. I'm studying very hard at improving my grading skills, but a lot of stuff still confuses me. looking at some holdered examples of this coin I feel this one might be AU55. its hard to see from my photos and the toning but it definitely has PL fields. IDK if they would give that designation with the toning. I've got 402 in the coin to my door, and I don't want to put good money behind bad. What's opinion's? advice?

to The Community! I think you are right in that the coin is AU at best. The 'splotchy toning' is not appealing to me and it may be the result of a botched cleaning attempt. I don't think the coin will straight grade, either. Chances are that this coin has already been on a few road trips to the grading services already and came back in a bag or in a "details" holder. If you don't like the coin now then you'll absolutely HATE it once your return privilege expires! That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it!

to the CCF. Agree with mid-AU as a grade. If you believe the coin is damaged then I suggest you return it. A damaged coin will always remain damaged.
Take a look at my other hobby ... https://www.jk-dk.artToo many hobbies .... too much work .... not enough time.

For that amount of money, I'd return it if in doubt as to condition.

im not too experienced with Morgan dollars but I do have a thought about coins and my first impressions with them that I can share. ive never been successful at convincing myself to like a coin I didnt initially like.

There is definitely wear, and mid-AU seems about right. Hard to tell originality of the surfaces with these pics, and not convinced that it's PL. I doubt you'd be happy if it ended up in an AU details holder.

Always difficult to assess a coin from still pictures alone. That said, the coin does look pleasing to me however there is definite rub to the high points of the hair curls, hair above forehead and ear, cotton tops and the leaves. The reverse looks much more straight but trying to "look through the toning" is always a subjective challenge. In my opinion it would probably straight grade in the high AU range but I would not pay MS money for this particular coin.

too much glare on the surfaces to assess accurately. the 90(CC) should be sharp and bold. the weakness of the high points on both sides lead me to believe the coin is not MS. without better photos to assess the luster I would call it AU55 also before you send it back if you want a better assessment repost photos. your photos are sharp enough just avoid overhead lighting. best lighting is indirect like a window sill on a cloudy day also the coin should be posted in the " US Classic and Colonial Coin Grading" forum. this forum is for modern coins. the descriptions are listed on the coin forum page as to the proper one. I also suggest if you are newer to collecting or a particular series, post the photos here before pulling the trigger if possible. there are a lot of years experience on this site.

Unable to grade from these photos. Need sharper images and better lighting.

Rub on the high points is pretty apparent, AU-55.
The easiest way to judge MS is the luster. All MS Morgans have nice, cartwheel luster. Breaks in the luster normally indicate wear.

Wow, thank you so much for all the great advice and suggestions. MisterT I agree with you. I actually like the coin, I guess at this point I feel I over paid. I'm trying to get better at cherry picking, but knowledge isn't free. I really don't like buying from ebay in the first place but there is only one coin/bullion shop in my area. The owner is a great friend of mine and is unbelievably good to me. I buy from him every week, but there's not always stuff like this available. I messaged the seller to return it. if he's offers a discount I might just keep it. thanks again guys and sorry for posting in the wrong place.
