There are a couple things about this coin that confuses me. Is that a die crack on the front? And what is up with the reverse upper left? The coin looks to be in good shape, the rims overall are thick and sturdy.

@cad, that linear mark looks more like a cut to me rather than a die crack, but can you please add a close-up pic of this area? That might help for us to be more sure. Thx.

On the reverse, that is a folded over Rim Fin.

Hmm sorry but that new pic isn't too much better. I still think this looks like a scratch rather than a die crack.

Sharper pics would definitely help, but I would say die crack on the obverse. Based on the shadows, it looks raised, especially where it carries into the neckline. I would agree with JimmyD on the reverse, folded over Rim Fin.

Here is a lot of three 1940-S, all with a similar die crack, which goes rim to rim on these and has another crack perpendicular thru the hair.

Take a look here...
Scroll to nearly the bottom of the page http://cuds-on-coins.com/rim-to-rim...u-s-coins-2/
RRDC-10c-1940S-01

The 1940-S Winged Liberty Head dime has a bisecting rim to rim die crack on the obverse die. The die crack starts at the rime above the E in LIBERTY, goes into Liberty's cap and into her hair. There is a junction where another die crack has formed that travels upward to the left and blind ends. The die crack re-enters the bottom portion of Liberty's cap, passes through her neck and terminates at the opposing rim.

Good eye!
