i saw that one. I'm pretty impressed with the work on tooling out the word copy. they got lazy with the aging and wear though so it looked...odd. this one would be pretty convincing if malicious individual were a little more patient.
that gmm die combination is not that close to any of the 1794 varieties so this coin doesn't stand up to serious scrutiny. things like this are one of the strongest arguments for learning die attribution skills if you are interested in collecting anything early american. the time invested will pay for itself.
thanks for posting it!

And they almost strike again! Today's listing; 1793 chain, it doesn't match either known 1793 chain reverse but is closer to S-2 (3&4): No cigar! Image comparisons to matching GMM: I sent the seller (from Germany) a note and he ended the auction; turns out he is in my Face Book Group...

burfle23 -- The service you provide to the numismatic community is invaluable, and probably greatly underappreciated outside of the Dark Siders and EAC/C4. If I were a wealthy man, I'd personally pay for you to make a series of printed reference guides detailing some of the more commonly seen counterfeit early US and pre-federal coinage issues. It would be a very valuable thing for new and experienced collectors alike to have at hand. Unfortunately, what little extra money I have goes to putting more copper in the cabinet...
Some of these are no-brainers, but like @numismatic student noted, some of the heavily "worn" examples had me scratching my head for much longer than they should have.
Also I agree with @CarrsCoins about the need to learn what you're buying before you spend the money, especially when it comes to early copper, silver, gold, and colonial coinage. I think one of the challenges our hobby needs to address is making reference material for early coinage issues more available to the community at large and more affordable while at the same time ensuring that the authors who have done all of the research and effort into making those reference books are fairly compensated and credited. A good start would be making some of the most popular reference guides available in Kindle format; I read almost everything on Kindle, and it's far easier to carry with me to a show than a stack full of books.

Thank you paralyse; if I had the resources I would bind my submitted Coin Week articles into print. I actually reference them myself to do quick evaluations of subject coins using it as an on-line reference... https://coinweek.com/author/jack-d-young/

Thanks Jack and Jim for the insights... Also a real testament to Ron Landis' engraving abilities, as he engraved the dies from photos and by hand, just as the old timers would have done, he made all the machines and tools necessary to make these. Ron did it in an educational way and never tried to fool anyone to my knowledge, a very good friend of mine worked with the Gallery Mint for quite awhile (before and after the move to Eureka Springs, AR), and he never had a bad word to say about anyone of them. R.I.P. Joe Rust (Ron's GMM Partner and one heck of a talented musician). For more information on Ron and the Gallery Mint Museum see this page still up by Cliff Bolling: http://gmm.cdbpdx.com/
