Most everywhere here people have their coins, currency in slabs, Graded their coin, taken out of the Original Packaging and shown. I'm not against it, or Changes, That's Just Fact. I/m just Not into slabbing My coins, for Any reason. To see what Another person Perceives the grade to be, Some people Even have graded coins, graded or Re certified, for Assurances, 2 grades, one slab. Early release labels, Emergency release, Ex Mint director labels etc, money will buy the best label, of course these services Cost and the slabbed coins Should have some Added value, to the right person. I'm seeking ideas to how many of us collect in slabs, or Original Packaging. I have started my collecting over 50 years ago, these " options " were Not available or Thought of. Collect what You choose, passions differ, My original intention changed and collections Grow and diversify, along with storage, display, on hand holding a Whitman Lincoln Cent Book from 1909- 1941. When I was 8 my passion to collect was in its infancy and I had No Clue as to how it would grow. I'm sure there are Super collections in slabs, Look what Money can do for a slab label, The Norweb collections The Elisberg Collections, Big Names, big labels, Big Money Too.... !!! Wow.. People have registry sets that show their slabs and the sets are rated for Points, Very cool system. I'm wondering how many people like Myself, Have All these type collections and Enjoy and have the sets, in albums, or ? in All original condition too. Thoughts Welcome from All

None of the 3,000 or so coins in my collection are slabbed. I have about 200 US coins, about half of which are classic. They only form part of my collection from early ancients in all cultures to modern All of my coins are attributed with write ups on the 2x2's, which contain them:- price and when paid, provenance, description and grade stated where necessary. Slabs do not allow the collector to do this

I do buy a few slabbed coins, but 99% of my collection is raw. I'm a member of PCGS and NGC, but I've only sent a handful of coins in for certification. I don't have anything against slabbed coins, but the very nature of collecting errors seems better suited to keeping them raw. At least to me.
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!

Only- 30,125 of Them Around! Good Luck Grading. PS, I realized I forgot a Type I collect, The Original Old Green PCGS Sample Slabs Collection, That series is Almost Completed Too..... LOVE Sample Slabs !!!!! So, While I have sent in 2 coins myself to grade, I do have a couple Dozen Blue PCGS boxes Too..... My Originally intended concept, was Not to collect as I have, Instead, Change, in some cases, Is Good !!

I moved this to the Main forum to broaden the audience. Most of my coins are in Dansco albums. This includes 2x2 holdered coins in 12-pocket pages. Most of the things I have bought from the US Mint are still in their OGP. The exceptions are proof and uncirculated mint sets; those coins are freed and placed into Dansco albums. I have a set of Ikes in PCGS holders. This is a second set (first is in Dansco). Coins were bought already graded, I did not send them in. This set also includes two stray NGC graded Ikes. They are duplicates of PCGS examples that I acquired before I decided to make the entire set PCGS.

Since my US collection is mostly composed of older (pre-1900) and more expensive coins, it is 100% slabbed. And only by PCGS or NGC. I personally would only use ANACS for less expensive 20th/21st century coins.
At this time I expect to die with my collection intact and that time is closing in sooner than I'd like (I'm 81). I also expect my wife to outlive me so she'll have the work of disposing of the collection (she would have no interest in keeping it). Having it all in slabs will make that task easier. Plus she knows who to contact to help with that task.

98% of my collection are in albums and 2x2's. I have some slabbed coins. Most are Canadian in ICCS "soft slabs". Most were purchased that way already. I have not broken any coins out of slabs to-date.

Quote: I have not broken any coins out of slabs to-date. I have done this just one time... http://goccf.com/t/431501I expect it to happen again... soon... there is one last hole in my 7070 and the only appealing coins I have found for sale are slabbed...

Great topic/discussion MorgansDad.. 75% of my Morgans are PCGS/NGC, the rest raw. This was mostly because I tried to abide by "Buy the coin, not the slab", and price has always been a limitation for me. I've also tried to remind myself to buy the best I could afford at the time. I do not have many duplicates. About 90% of my ASE's are slabbed. The ones that are not are from the Mint. I've only sent into NGC 1x. I cherry picked a 1878CC along with 3 other sweet looking Morgans and was curious how they would grade. All came back 63 or 64. The rest of the collection is raw from coin roll hunting which resulted in some nice finds including clashes, cracks, etc which I like. This also allowed me to fill some books for the kids and grandkids. I would say I prefer raw but do not trust my knowledge of everything that I like. Also, many came from internet sales without the benefit of coin in hand.

"Having it all in slabs will make that task easier." I'm with Kanga. I don't buy any coins that aren't certified and slabbed. I just prefer the slight peace of mind that goes along with having a 'second opinion' and I also know that if/when I want to sell something it is generally quicker and easier (at least on ebay) if it is slabbed and graded by a TPG.

It's a mix for me. My collection currently spans 218BC to 2017 with ancients, worlds, and US. Most of the ancients are raw, which is normal. Some of the worlds are because thats how I bought them. For the US, some is raw, some was bought slabbed, and I've submitted to ANACS a few times as well when $ and/or variety attribution matters. I like that I can let my kids hold the slabbed stuff without much stress on my end, and I know the collection will return more $ when I die and they sell it.
There will never be a day when ALL of my collection is slabbed nor will I break it all out and try to make it fit into a premade album, and that is just F12 in my soul. There will never be an Dansco-type album that meets all my needs with varieties and errors and this and thats of varying sizes, at last not affordable.
Everything is in a binder and labelled somehow; the raw stuff in 2x2s and slabs in lighthouse slab pages. And everything is tracked in a spreadsheet with notes, what I've paid, etc. Some binders have mixed 2x2 pages and slab pages. Some are just one or the other other. Pulling out a set might require pulling 2-3 binders, and that just makes it 2-3X the fun to lay it all out!
