Hi everybody, Recently I bought a Canadian 5 cents coin dated 1944 which is not made of steel and it is copper/brass and when I checked it on internet, I found that there is only one coin reported of this date with brass composion (Tombac) and therefore I decided to share its photos with you to have your kind opinion in this regard. With best regards Habib.

I suppose the obvious question and first test is: does it stick to a magnet? If the answer is "yes", then it's not tombac, just gilt/gold plated post-mint.
If it doesn't stick, then you might indeed have something.

Chinese made counterfeit. It's round rather than multi sided. The morse code is mushed and George looks weak. Surprised the weight is correct.

Yes, I agree with it being a fake or Chinese counterfeit. As DBM stated, it is round , not 12-sided. It looks like the fakers tried to crush the Reverse Morse code into a round planchet and nearly obliterated the code. Only 42 & 43 5 cents from tombac. The magnet test by DBM would be worthwhile, but I think that it's a fake.

I hope that you didn't pay too much for it as it is definitely a counterfeit.

Looks just like the one I bought as a fake (on purpose to study) years ago off of ebay when ebay allowed such things. Take a look at pictures of a certified 1945 Tombac (or 1944 if you can find pictures) online. Closely compare the details to see how "mushy" the details on (our) your coin(s) is compared to a real Tombac coin. Also notice the micro-pitting on the surface from being a cast copy.

Dear all, Thank you for your kind reply and suggestions. This coin does not stick to a magnet and it has origi al luster and not dull color or blackish. I also analysed its metal composition which showed it is made up %91 copper and %9 zinc which is the exact composition of Tomback metal. I am attaching other photos for your kind information. Please let me know your suggestions and what I have to do next? With best regards, Habib.

Sorry, Habib, but as others have pointed out, it is fake. Genuine 1944 tombac 5 cent pieces are 12-sided; your coin is round.

Made in China. Compare the ding in the hair with the one shown by Earle. Same dies.

Dear all, Thank you for your kind suggestions, but I just wanted to say that Tombac coins are originally rounded and inside the round planchet, the designed 12 sided pattern. The 12 sided coins are strated from 1944 with bronze composition. With regards, Habib.

If it is such a valuable coin, then it should be send to one of the top graders for verification. No one is going to believe it is genuine unless it is slabbed.

Habib ... You wanted to know what you should do. I'd report the seller to the authorities for selling counterfeit items. Regardless of the weight or the alloy composition, it was struck with a ROUND die, not a 12-sided one. As nickelsguy says, the mark on your coin is the same as the fake bought by another member, so they came from the same fake die. Just take the loss and hold it as an expensive learning experience ... and report the seller to the authorities or auction or ebay.

OR, do as suggested here and send it to one of the big two TPG. You will have your answer very quickly. Think on this....IF someone out there actually owned a genuine coin like this do you really believe it would be for sale on ebay? It would find it's way to an auction block where the big fish who could afford it tend to shop.

An obvious fake . As stated earlier the OP just not really too interested in the truth . Get it authenticated and get back to us . We see these and other fakes regularly at our Weekly market .
