Picked this up today for a couple bucks from a dealer happy to get a couple bucks for it. Just one of the nicer vise jobs I've seen as far a cool looking so it was worth it. 1972-D Lincoln Memorial cent damage - vise job Edited by tropicalbats 10/28/2022 12:03 am

Most vise jobs aren't as symmetrical as this. I wonder what the third party graders would do? Just dismiss it as damage? (Which of course it is).

Looks like it was done in a homemade retaining collar of some kind. Maybe a section of pipe or tubing that had an inside measurement that was very close to the diameter of the cent.
I wonder why they used the reverse of two other coins to impress the images on this one. It seems that they would have done the memorial on one side and the reverse on the other. That's what I would have done, anyway. Maybe they didn't have another 1972-D cent to use for the obverse and thought that would give it away.
Very nice vise! Thanks, TB!

That does have a nice strong & centered look to it.

The two reverses added to the obverse and reverse sends the first signal that this was not a mint error. The mirrored letters are the second clue.

I think it was Tony that did this, not Johnny.. Tony had a lot of time off lately.. This is an extremely well done vise job. I wonder if the object (center) coin was heated first to soften it up a bit. John

At our office we have a big shop area since half of what we use for wildlife work isn't available for sale and has to be made. This includes the tools to easily make coins like this one. Just always felt there are enough of them around to use for educational purposes, but always tempting to grind the rim off a pair of coins and press them in correctly oriented and just see how nice a fake I could make.

Wow, I was just looking at ebay auctions and saw that one and figured I'd put the link in here. CoinHI beat me to it! Yup, that's what happens when someone actually does up one of these things right and it looks good with correct sides and orientation taken into account. It's why I've never really wanted to play around with such things, since if they get out people can get scammed out of big money.
