@khi, first welcome to CCF. Second, with this extensive wear and other damage, that gouged area is most likely also damage.

Seems to be a BMT - Bashed, Mashed, and Trashed. Post-mint damage.

to the CCF!

This coin most likely looked totally normal when it left the mint.

The over-all look suggest that this coin was buried in acidic soil or maybe tossed in a fountain many years ago. Corrosion has reshaped the coin into what you see here. The gouges have an almost eroded look to them, kind of organic. They make me think of running water cutting through rocks, but I can't say what caused them.

I have a small collection of coins with interesting damage like this. They don't have any value, but I like them, so I put them in 2x2s and drop them in a binder. Somehow it just doesn't seem right to dispose of a coin that has been through so much.

ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!

If underweight (3.11 grams) I maybe an acid dip issue. It looks also altered as well. But knowing the weight would help to see if that is the issue or not. To me it doesn't look like a mint error.

Just post mint damage. Interesting, but no value.
