I ran across this listing which surely cannot be legal. "Coins" are not marked as "copy" or "replica" as far as I can tell. It seems that they also reproduce other rare coins. For $20, this is an invitation to scammers. I've never dealt with anyone on that site - perhaps the experts will weigh in. An admitted forgery. Ummmmm. It seems that most copiers get away with it.
Can be tested with comparative ping tone, against known genuine.

The seller is unequivocally violating the law. They would be better off pretending the coin is real and claiming ignorance, instead of admitting "I made it myself." That puts them in the category of "engaged in the manufacturing, or importation into the United States for introduction into or distribution in commerce, of imitation political or imitation numismatic items." They therefore absolutely must have COPY incused on the coin in the legally described dimensions.
Not that anybody will do anything about it, but a listing like that is just dumb. You're stating for all the world to see that you know it's a counterfeit.

I would assume that is no different than creating/producing counterfeit bills. The feds would probably be interested in talking to this person.

More than likely, the "I Made It Myself" refers to the artificial toning rather than the actual production of the coin which was probably produced on a Chinese press. Counterfeit Rare coins may dupe an amateur but rarely a professional with access to XRF and a close comparison to a genuine example. Subtle differences will be observed to the trained eye.

The real question is where is the seller located? If they are in the US then yes what they are doing is illegal. If they are located in China then what THEY are doing is perfectly legal. And if you live in the US and buy it then YOU are the one committing the crime, not them.
