A Barber half compares favorably to F-12 at a value of $100 plus or minus. But there are blemishes in the form of pitting or corrosion spread around. So would it be non-graded and labeled as damaged or would the value just be what a buyer & seller agree to? If sent in to a TPG, is it likely it would be returned as not graded? I have no experience and never had a need for grading- but it just happens I need to determine a value for this piece. It was given to me as a counterfeit, but it's genuine. Blemishes most affect eye appeal, and by that route, may also affect the value. Beauty (or otherwise), is in the eye of the beholder.
A blotchy toned coin can have the same grade as an evenly toned coin, but could be perceived as being less desirable to include in a collection.

Even if genuine, the pitting on your coin would likely reduce the value considerably. Can you give us the weight?

Pitting like that is a major problem. IMO value for a coin like that is 50% of catalog as a starting point and then go down from there.

Turns out not so much pitting- more like blotches. This picture shows remains of a black scale that was picked or scraped off leaving the spoiled eye appeal. I like the idea and appreciate the suggestion of minus 50% value. I think even if 50% value, I bet a potential buyer would pass. Likely a potentially valuable coin that has gone bad and worth only what somebody would be willing to give? To me, a collector of Barber halves wouldn't want to buy this one.

to me it looks like corrosion and would be nice to have both sides full photos to look at but I doubt the coin would grade. I think the obverse would give the coin a 97 ED and would receive a no grade. I doubt a barber collector would pay 50% for it. I would personally pass

Well I can say for certainty that it will affect my value if I was going to purchase it . Coins like these borderlines on being a details call to just a poor eye appeal .

Ok thanks everyone, I have what I need for the write-up. I needed to know how the poor eye appeal affected what value the piece could have had. I think knocking off 50 % and going down from there to even include potential buyers passing it up makes for a good evaluation. I'm documenting some coins that really are counterfeit and found this piece was in the mix.

Looks like a VF details coin due to the environmental damage.
