I'll leave you guys to attribute and grade this 1797 large cent. It is quite a scarce variety which very often comes rough and grainy. The best known was a F15 for many years until a VF20 (EF40 details) appeared in 2003. This is quite a few years ago, but I believe it still holds true. This particular example was an ebay find, and is not too bad as they come, although it suffers from the same planchet deficiencies as majority of the variety. Let me know how you would attribute and grade it

I'm not very good with these, but I'll say G-06 or possibly VG-08.

i love these early coppers and trying to grade them, although its not easy. weak and uneven strikes were common. planchet issues abound. some of these issues can be ignored and others can drop the grade a tad. I havent figured out how TPG's look at that entirely. areas I look at hair tie sharpness and separation obvdate lettering denticles lowest hair curl reverselettering denticles wear on bow highest leaves tobverse hair ties are not fully separate. between G6-V8 date. between G6-V8 denticles. between G6-V8 lowest hair curl. between G6-V8 obverse G6+ reverse lettering - G6 denticles - G6 wear on bow - G4 highest leaves - G4 reverse G4+ i'll net it at G6 based on these markers. there is some corrosion on the obverse. reverse porosity. ding on jaw and a possible scratch on the right obv field that could affect whether the coin grades straight or not

TPG grading, I wouldn't be shocked if the gave it an F12 due to the nice obverse even though the reverse is lesser (probably a weaker strike to begin with). I think it would get a Details corrosion or environmental details along the way. I've seen worse get an F12 for sure! EAC grading I bet would net a G something due to the corrosion and how harshly most things are graded by that crowd. It's a nice coin!

VG-8 detail, with light corrosion (ED).
My attribution reference is the 2005 Heritage auction catalog for the Wes Rasmussen large cent collection. The closest match for your coin seems to be S-124 which is described as high R5, with 35-45 examples known. If that's correct you do indeed have a very scarce coin.
Nice pick!

I'd say 8/5 net, would be pleased as punch to own it. The only one I've ever handled personally was in a PCGS slab graded G4 straight and it was much less attractive than yours.

Nice example. I enjoy reading the experts views on these coins although I'm way early on the learning scale.

VG-8. Not the best eye appeal but still a coin I wouldn't mind having.

i would be thrilled to own this one. this is a very hard coin to find. additionally so in an early die state. the late die state is more available. it has the date partially obliterated by die swelling. finding an eds example is a challenge. LDS for reference:

Thank you, everybody for your grading opinions and comments. This is very helpful to me. One particular thing I have noticed about S-124 is that while the obverses may be occasionally be smooth (as the case here), the reverses are invariably grainy. As you have pointed out, this is a very scarce variety at R-5+. No quite an N.C, but close. A lucky ebay cherry pick.

G6 for me, nice example of a tough Sheldon. Typical weakly struck or flat stuck.

TPG, due to the rarity of the coin, will most likely increase the grade (but I'm not sure about that). I think the VG score will be fair.
