I have a quick opportunity to pick up this coin for $4800 including buyer's premium. Does the forum think this would be a good buy? Coin has some lite toning.
Thanks.

The scratch on the cheek appears to be on the holder.

Do YOUR homework BEFORE buying this coin. Make sure you have a return priv, too. Don't make a 4800$ mistake on a coin you may not be happy with once it's in your hands. Check Greysheet and prices of previous coins sold before committing to this coin. Good luck!

Thanks for your replies. Because it was an online auction I am not able to inspect this coin but all the metrics say it is a good buy based on the holder grade. The 1927-D in 65+ is a conditional rarity based on Greysheet and auction archives. But from my experience, the old adage "buy the coin not the grade" is strong here 'cause we know that both NGC & PCGS have slabbed a lot of dogs over the years. $4800 would be an expensive lesson with it went south on me.

You did well to pass. Like you stated this is a conditional rarity and a big gamble. It hammered for $4,894 with Buyer's Fee. For that price you better be darn sure it's a strong 65 and from the images I wouldn't be able to say that. As a MS64+ it's worth a 1/3 of that price and as a MS65 probably would bring $2,500. It didn't sell for close to 65+ money and that's likely for a reason.

I agree. Glad I passed on it from a collector's perspective but the internet really supports a lot of holder buying when the coin itself does not support the grade on the holder. Since I was adding to my Registry collection it didn't meet my standards because based on the image it actually looked like a 63 or 64. Thanks, NGC. **

To me it's obvious OP wanted to crack it and get a 66.
66 is $25,000!
Massive jump from 65 which is $2750.
