I have a 1942 no mint mark Wheat penny, which has a straight line coming straight down the face side of the penny. How would this be achieved, possibly from age and maybe in someone's pocket? It wouldn't be a die error would it? Also does not having a mint mark in that year be any sort of error. And could someone help with what grade would you give This?

no mint mark on this coin indicates it was minted in Philadelphia. The line on the obverse appears to be post-strike damage--a scratch.

I agree that it is a scratch on the coin.

@Dearborn could you elaborate as what you are meaning when you mentioned the BIE?

Dearborn, I think you may be right with the start of the BIE. Maybe a small die chip? A close up may tell us more. The diagonal line appears to be a scratch, just post mint damage. How was it made? Who knows? Damage is damage.

Just a Wheat cent now with that coin scratch on the obverse.
