I found a 20$ 1882 Liberty Head among some jewelry from my mom who passed recently but I know very little about coins. I have been trying to research what the approximate value may be but I can't figure out whether it is an "S" or not and if I try to sell it I don't want to get ripped off. From what I can tell it appears to be in decent shape and I took the best photos I could with my phone and kept them under 300k. Any help would be sincerely appreciated!!!!

Yes, it is an S mint mark. There were over a million with the S mm minted.
Compliments on your pictures for a first timer, everything is done right.

Nice AU 1882-S Double Eagle! Also appears to be genuine.

Nice coin and photos. You can expect about $2,000 from this coin.

Gold being so soft this piece has taken it's share of knocks and nicks. I'm at low AU. Good photography.

Thanks for all the great input. I looked at a few ones marked "s" and this looked like a dot or something so I wasn't sure but you folks know far better than me. Thank you very, very much!!!

Sorry about your mom, that's always hard. Yes with gold so soft that S got mushed from circulation, but it's clearly an S. A big hunk of gold, and a wonderful keepsake if you decide to hang onto it.

Sorry about your Mom.
If you need the money now...then sell it. If not...Keep it for a little while and re-think it...If your mom kept it...it must have been something special to her.

Sorry about your Mom.... just throwing this out there: too many marks (both sides) to support damage by circulation; maybe it was a "pocket piece" from an ancestor? The "S" mintmark is a blob as struck; if it were to have worn away in circulation, so would have all the devices around it. Dies were shipped from Philadelphia plain; the mintmark is added at the mint the die was shipped to. Many 19thC SF issues show blob mintmarks...
