This "coin" was being sold as an unstruck planchet. I saw the textured surface on the one side and sort of assumed it was a split planchet and wanted to pick that up.

Took a look and it certainly does not seem like a coin blank at all. One rim is rounded toward the edge and the other is pretty crisp, which makes me think it was a punch out. Unsure why the metal roll was textured on one side, but it was. So can't really say why this was made, but at 19.1mm diameter and 2.95g it is so close to cent-sized that I'm thinking it was a blank made either as a straight up slug or as a blank to be struck into a counterfeit. Anyway, interesting one although lots of unknowns, including why it shows inclusions in part of the rough side.

I'm thinking you are right @tb. It is an interesting piece and seems not to have come from the mint.

This is a blank, but it is not a planchet.

It is showing evidence of being ground down, so perhaps it was a copper cent destroyed in an effort to deceive?

I feel it was a planchet, but the one side split off and now is missing and it took the proto rim with it.

Coop, no, it is not a planchet. It is some kind of a blank. I sent these images to Mike Diamond when we were discussing a different coin and here is his response:

"It's certainly a copper or copper-alloy blank. A slug is a distinct possibility. Beyond that, I can't speculate on its origin or intended purpose."

Very interesting texture on the one side. Looks like something was impressed there at one time.

Weighs too much to be a split.

I would point out a maxim to remember: just because it is round and made of metal, does not mean it must be coin-related.

It's not an electrical box punch-out tag, as there are no sprues (unless there's been an excellent filing job done on it). But it may, nevertheless, be some kind of punch-out, made by somebody who needed a nice round hole in their piece of copper sheeting. They have their piece of copper with a hole in it; you have the piece of scrap metal they didn't want.
