I had a buyer purchase two 1865 Indian Head cents. Both coins were clearly listed as "Details" coins with environmental issues and deposits or corrosion. The seller later contacted me, asking for a refund, since the coins had issues, one of them with deposits and the other dark in color. I let her know that the listings clearly described the issues with both coins, but that I offer a 30 day return and she could send them back. When the coins arrived today I saw that she had harshly cleaned both of them. I called ebay to start the process of disputing the return and refund, but ended up completely lost as to what the operator was asking of me to identify myself. I was then disconnected. Before calling ebay back, I'm looking for suggestions about how to proceed with disputing this return. This is not something I have had to deal with before in my thirteen years of selling on ebay. The coins, which once were "details" coins, are now worthless. Here are my listing photos for the coins, with what they look like now after the seller returned them. Paul Bulgerin

Paul, the coins returned to you may not even be the same ones you sent. It's very possible that the buyer was using you to upgrade their coins from the crappy ones they had to the nice ones you were selling, at no cost to themselves. It's a fear I have every time I sell on ebay.

Good luck. I sold a G scale Shay locomotive on ebay several years ago. I had detailed photos of everything and even photos of how it was packed and shipped. Buyer clearly stripped parts off the engine and told ebay it broke in shipping. It breaking was not possible. ebay sided with the buyer, I got a worthless engine backand was out about 40 bucks in shipping costs. I no longer sell anything, just buy occasionally. Wish you the best of luck and hope it works out in your favor.

It is obvious to me that these are the same coins, but not in the same condition in which they were received by the buyer. This is they key to your appeal. Those images should prove your case. These coins have been ruined by removing the natural patina. https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/m...lers?id=4369

It looks like the total price for the two coins with shipping both ways was probably around $60. You have to ask yourself if the hassle you are going to go through getting this appeal approved by ebay and the potential retaliation (including negative feedback) by the buyer in the future is worth the money.

I'd send the coins back to the buyer, C.O.D. and lose no sleep over the one bad review she may leave you.

After my second call to ebay, which lasted 35 minutes, the whole time spent with the service rep trying to link my ebay account with PayPal so that the funds can't be removed without my permission, it resulted in the rep accidentally changing my PayPal password. I have reset it and the rep is going to call me back tomorrow afternoon. This may be a lost cause, a Sisyphean task of sorts, but I'm going to see where it leads. I basically want to know how I can send photos to ebay to plead my case about what the buyer did to the coins. Good thing I'm retired and have time.

if it were me I would refund them, block the buyer and move on. it sucks. its the cost of doing business. not really different than if they had been lost in the mail or if you had a shop that got shoplifted.
when I have fought these types of things in the past it was like getting paid minimum wage to have my teeth pulled.

As everyone said, ebay was less than helpful. I filed a complaint against the buyer, but the message that came with that said the best thing to do was to refund the buyer, so I did that. I did see somewhere, on the less-than-helpful ebay help site, that I can file an appeal within thirty days, so I'll have to see if I can figure that out.

What happened to those coins is terrible! Try whatever remaining remedies are available, but realize that you may have a lost cause.

Unbelievable that someone would have the gall to do that to the coins and return them. I wish you the best of luck, but I suspect it will be fruitless. Any chance you could give us the name of the buyer so we can also block her?

This is quite appalling. Just appalling. I'm at a loss for words. ebay does itself no favours whatsoever with the approach it takes to sellers, having always come down on the side of the buyer in past experience. They've made their 15% fee and that's all they're interested in really. I've learnt to never post feedback for a buyer until they have left feedback for me. That way you can at least reciprocate with a negative. I sold an amp on there last year, and the clown left me negative feedback before he even messaged me to say there was a problem with it. Chancer. He demanded his money back saying it was broken and he 'had a music engineer friend come in and install it'. All he had to do was plug in a USB cable. And it wasn't broken either when he *eventually* sent it back... Anyway, you may well be up against it, Paul. They simply don't care, which kind of steers me away from using the site, however useful it is. Negative feedback on ebay isn't the end of the world, it's just a nuisance. Personally I'd send the coins back to them, say here you go seeing as you ruined them, you sort it out with ebay. But then again, I'm a feisty sort of chap. Good luck, I really hope that this works out for you.

Paul Bulgerin, Kudos to you for at least trying to do something so that buyer thinks twice about doing that kind of thing to more sellers. If a seller does nothing the scrupulous buyer just goes on doing it to other sellers. Most likely you will end up with the greasy end of the stick,eBay got their money, so they won't be of much if any help to you.A negative feedback for you is no big deal really.Block the buyer and let us know who it is so we don't get burned by her/him too.Goog luck to you.
