I have been actively looking for this die for years. The problem with finding one is that most ebay photos aren't good enough to see it, while the coin is expensive enough that one can't just go around buying anything that looks close and just hoping to eventually hit one. Coin shows tend to have a couple, but not many, and I've already looked at those at any of the shows in my general area. So the other day I decided to give another look through the ebay stuff and saw this one. Not super clear pics but it did look good. If it had been a higher grade I might not have pulled the trigger, but in 65 I took the chance for $175. And... it's a winner! The die marker for this one is a bit of re-engraved die along the bust left of the date. I think this leaves about 6 more dies to find although not every coin is slabbed and verified yet so that number could change. 1938 proof Lincoln Wheat cent doubled die - DDO-001

Great job on the pick. Sellers' images are usually good at hiding any kind of detail.
I remember you had been looking for one a couple of years ago, so I'm glad to see you found one. Congrats.

Thanks folks! This one has been a long road, with many times just staring at blurry photos wondering. And this was my third try for it, with the first two being normal coins and eventually just getting sold off at a loss. Picking varieties is not a perfect science, but even with this one it wasn't super clear but just had to take the chance. Of course, surely I'll see a perfect example come up now that I have it, but still, that'd be okay as well. Better two than zero.

Well done and congratulations on the milestone acquisition.
I, as well, have to take your word for it as the doubling is too subtle for me to make out.

I'm not so sure these aren't rare. I looked for them a few times (looking for you). And never saw one that I thought was a maybe. Also theres not a lot of these to go through. Glad you found one!

Thanks again! As for rarity, it might be but just hard to know. Based on the number of actually great photos and real coins I've looked at along the way, it at least isn't very common. Other than the plate coin, this coin, and one that was posted here a couple years ago I've not seen any more of them come up. But few are looking for, or even know about this die, so I wouldn't expect them to come up for sale attributed very often.
