Hello all. Found this rough looking 1939 P Nickel recently while coin roll hunting. Initially I assumed tool damage post mint but after some research to me it looks more like a die break leading to Cud (steps) and maybe other stuff? I'm not real experienced with errors or varieties in this nature so figured I'd get some thoughts from the community. Either way it looks interesting and Jefferson with no mouth is a little freaky.
If it were a die chip it would be raised, not incuse. If it were a Die Cud, it would be on the outside edge of the coin and raised higher than the rim area on your coin. It is damage as mentioned. Incuse marks on a coin are most often caused by coin contact.
I'm not seeing any damage to the reverse in the area to say that it took a hit. There also does not seem to have any metal welling up at the edges to indicate a hit. Could this be a huge strike through?
