Hello all. Found this rough looking 1939 P Nickel recently while coin roll hunting. Initially I assumed tool damage post mint but after some research to me it looks more like a die break leading to Cud (steps) and maybe other stuff? I'm not real experienced with errors or varieties in this nature so figured I'd get some thoughts from the community. Either way it looks interesting and Jefferson with no mouth is a little freaky.

@leg, yes that is kinda freaky, but it looks more like damage than anything else.

I'm thinking a circulation hit--a lateral hit. For numismatic purposes, Cuds are associated with rims.

If it were a die chip it would be raised, not incuse.

If it were a Die Cud, it would be on the outside edge of the coin and raised higher than the rim area on your coin.

It is damage as mentioned. Incuse marks on a coin are most often caused by coin contact.

"And tell me, Mr. Jefferson, what good is a phone call if you're unable to speak?"

since it can be replicated easily, it has to be chalked up to damage rather than Agent Smith

I'm not seeing any damage to the reverse in the area to say that it took a hit. There also does not seem to have any metal welling up at the edges to indicate a hit. Could this be a huge strike through?
