Verify and attribute the correct variety for this one!

Do NOT take the easy/ obvious path as the TPG did...

PS, I have what I believe is the correct answer; I am planning a brief summary article in the near future.

looks like an altered date S-260 to me.

it has a large fraction reverse. that narrows it down quite a bit.

the T in cent being buried under that leaf makes it a 260 or 261.

the t in liberTy overhangs the hair slightly. thats S-260. the positions of E and R are also correct for S-260.

Not an expert, but there does look like a little smoothing/tooling around the number 4 in the date.

Of course CarrsCoins is correct!

As well as Spence; this is an altered date S-260 and was TPG holdered and certified as the cert image showed.

The coin was submitted for consignment at a major auction house when the cataloger correctly attributed it. The last I heard there was a "discussion" of what it was worth between the owner and the TPG. Ultimately the cert was nuked and I have not heard anything else about it since...

for a while I thought it was a S-261 and was pretty excited. for those that dont spend all their time on large cents - S-261 has the same reverse as this coin but the obverse die is the one that was used to make the 1804 restrike. the alteration is pretty good and not too far off what they came up with for the 1804 restrike. id have been pretty interested in trying to buy it if it was a S-261.

man...i cant believe that one got past them. they missed the easy tell for 1804 cents. thats pretty embarrassing for the premier third party grading company. the first thing to do with 1804s is to flip them to check the die alignment. a real 1804 has the O in Of opposite the 0 in 1804. its a unique die misalignment and something most counterfeiters miss. this trick will catch every altered date 1804 cent. for less than the cost of buying back this coin PCGS could send some of their graders to take my class at the ANA summer seminar. I would be happy to teach them a couple tricks for identifying this kind of work.

Good catch! Indeed, this is what the pros SHOULD do before holdering. The sexier the coin, the more diligence there should be.

That said, to the naked... fairly good doctoring there.
