Would appreciate any thoughts on this. It isn't very 'lustrous' and seems to have more of a frosted appearance. I'm not very familar with all the terms but have seen the word 'frosted' used on ebay. Would you call this frosted? Can you tell if it's been cleaned? Thank you for your help.

I'm thinking it may have been cleaned--given the images posted. I could go with AU53-55.

Anyone feel free to correct, but I think frosted is usually used to describe the frost-colored devices of a proof coin when compared to the non-frosty fields.

Thank you for the help guys. Now I know about frosted and what a cleaned coin looks like. Two more questions, was it common back in the day that these older coins were cleaned/dipped? I also have a 1923 S that exhibits more wear on the high spots but does have some luster. If the luster is gone would that indicate if it was cleaned?

From what I've learned, it wasn't considered bad form to clean coins a very long time ago although I can't put a date to this from lack of knowledge. Luster is a tricky thing because a polished coin can appear lustrous, but it's not the original coin surface. Maybe you could show us the 1923 S?

This is not what a frosty coin looks like, this is an overdipped coin that has lifeless surfaces.

Looks dipped. Washed out and silvery, not lusturous.
