Outside of the breast feathers this thing looks too good. If I recall right I purchased it from trusted LCS just getting around to looking at it closely. Trying to learn about everything to look for.

It doesn't look right to me. I think it may be a copy. Also looks lightly polished.

Photos make it look like it was polished. Can you get a picture of the obverse with less shadow?

I decided to dip a couple of my toned coins for fun for the purpose of education that's how I found this one and was amazed at how flawless it was.

Did you look in VAM? heckofa clash mark on the reverse. The milling looks like genuine US Mint-supplied milling...

Shtive, there are many things that raise a red flag for me. It seems that the shape of the breast and the interior wing feathers are very wrong. Also, the denticles are irregular around the circumference of the coin. Compare yours to the following. Also, do you have weight/diameter measurements for it? If it were me, I would return it to the LCS.

I looked up VAM's on vamworld.com, looks like there is only one VAM on there for 1883-o and it does not match this clash. I have also compared it to another 1883-o I have and to ones on PCGS.com.

I compared dimensions to my other 1883o and they appear very similar in dimension.

This coin has been stripped of its original surfaces. Would be best to return the coin if you can. It is a common date morgan with impaired surfaces.

Weight Tolerance just inside that for a US Silver Dollar, but
the weight is still high enough to check the alloy.
The easiest way to do that is with a comparative ping tone test against another silver dollar.

But I think coin still OK, if you take any minor scale error into account, and so
it leads me to think some sort of surface alteration (cleaning?), accounts for it's appearance.

I have never been good at the ping test. The dealer will be back today, I will swing in when he opens his doors. Cleaned/polished would make sense due to the dark toning it had. If it has been cleaned/polished what is the best thing to do with the coin? There would be no point sending it into PCGS would there? Can PCGS conservation do anything with it?

The issue you have here is that PCGS grading and conservation would cost more than the price of a nice choice BU 1883-O Morgan. If that is the case, why not just purchase a nice choice BU 1883-O Morgan and keep this coin as a pocket piece? No matter what PCGS does to try to conserve the coin, the result is not going to be nearly as nice as a nice original choice BU Morgan.
