I have asked a local dealer what her thought, he wasn't sure. What do you think artificial or natural? Edited by Shtiv 12/27/2022 5:47 pm

The coin only had one side exposed to sulfur, and the toning appears not to be album toning. How does the coin get blue rims and brown/gold on the fields and details? Another box to check for AT is no pull away toning around the date or stars. For me it does not add up to natural toning, so I am going to call the coin AT.

Waaay too many years ago, I knocked over a jar of EzEst on my desk at work, on a Friday on my way out the door. On my desk was a PL 1896-O Morgan dollar, face down on a piece of typing paper. This was well before TPG. When I came back in on Monday, I can't say what I was thinking, so close to Christmas and all, but it wasn't good. I lifted the Dollar off the drying paper, and saw what you see: a Moon of Orange with some Emerald, etc. Very pretty! Still PL fields but with one-sided toning that was sublime, for the times...

I'm wondering if an acetone dip would shed light on the obverse toning?

My guess is that this coin has suffered from accidental toning. I cannot think of a reason why anyone would wish to deliberately tone a Morgen in this nice condition, on one side only, to look like the op's, coin.
Oldgrouchguy's story may be relevant to the coin pictured.
