I am constantly upgrading the ones I have in my set all the time, and for the ones I already posted, I can share the desired upgrade when I can. I do have some good examples of Japan and Portugal

This is actually a more popular theme than you might have realized. I am one of those who keep such a collection, and recently I decided to classify them by whether they are currently circulating or not (regular coins or just NCLT), and whether the country still exists or not. This can be a gray area, and is also constantly in flux as new countries start issuing coins. So there are many ways to slice and dice the organization of the collection.
Good luck!

Quote: My 20th C starts a little different if the OP is intended to go by alphabet. My Argentina is a little farther down: Abyssinia Afghanistan Albania Alderney Algeria American Samoa Andorra Angola Anguilla Antigua Antigua and Barbuda And then Argentina I don't think of Abyssinia as separate from Ethiopia. Antigua is the 1970s FAO issue right? Very arguable if it should be separated from Antigua and Barbuda either. Alderney, American Samoa, and Anguilla are all very scarce NCLT. That Azores coin is a good find - especially in this grade! I don't think I had any of their coins by the time I left Moscow.

Come to think of it, Abyssinia and Ethiopia are one and the same, and I found myself a good Ethiopian coin some time ago. The Austrian 1967 2 groschen proof I found in a dealers junk foreign box back in 2019... I am also putting NCLT coins in my set for continuity reasons... For the Australia 1939 1/2 penny, that too was a junk box find a few months ago. I look through everything that a dealer has for sale since I overlook things at times.

How you collect is personal and flexible. Names of places change over time. Do any members that collect in this way have a coin from Persia? And also one from Iran? Some may have an ancient coin from the land of Persia, and a modern coin from Iran. Different names for the same place? Perhaps historical boundaries shifted? I have an old coin listed as Abyssinia because that is the name printed in the Krause catalog, the coin is dated within the years when that name was used, and paper money was also in use as "Bank of Abyssinia". Sort of let's me get away with inflating my collection by adding another checklist line.

Quote: Sort of let's me get away with inflating my collection by adding another checklist line. That makes sense. I like to count the RSFSR as separate from the USSR, and I think most OFEC collectors (who include NCLT and can afford the coins) would separate Dahomey from Benin even though those are undeniably different names for the same place. Just be careful to avoid accidentally including some unaffordable lines in your checklist... that might be more than a bit inconvenient! (Do you have Zanzibar? IIRC that's said to be the hardest entry in the 20C list, not counting Chinese and Mexican provinces. [EDIT: and Indian states, can't believe I forgot those!] Their 19C coins are common but apparently their 20C coins are extremely rare.)

There is so much about world coin discussion. So much so the EveryCountry Collectors Group is worthwhile. The checklist that you can download is a guide for anyone wanting to collect world coins. You can see how the dates, different governments, authorities and names of countries have changed. I was asked what I have for Zanzibar? That tells me there is one among us already aware.

I will admit to having a Western bias when it comes to countries changing their names: if the name-change is in an alphabet I can read (Latin, Greek or Cyrillic), the two names get separate country-listings. But if it's in an alphabet I can't read (like Abyssinia/Ethiopia, Burma/Myanmar, Persia/Iran and Siam/Thailand), then I usually just use the modern name. But it's not consistent; Ceylon and Sri Lanka have separate entries, even though that name change happened while the English country-name no longer appeared on the coinage.

Wow,what a great thread. I was just wondering if there were any other collectors as obsessed as my father was. We started collecting 50 years ago, just filling the penny holes, because at 12 that's all I could afford. He made it his life's hobby collecting coins from every country, state and city or province....still in existence or not. I'd like to think I helped him along with my travels around the world in the military for 30 years. Rough way to get the newest issues, but got to see the world a few times over. He was also heavily into metal detecting, doing so in several countries, and adding to his collection. Happy New Year and best wishes to all.

To reply to others: I have 2 Zanzibar coins, but both of them are from the 1800s. I have several other locations already mentioned above. I still need 48 more on my list to complete what is on my list
