Could be toning. But I have seen examples with this pattern that have been labeled bad alloy. Maybe bad alloy with toning or just a simply toned coin? Sorry to bother you. @279773, To do a good job of file off the T you has to invest a couple hundreds $ in special goldsmith tools. Hope after you can have the marketable price with some profit, at least a beer LOL
Your nickel is not an improper alloy mix. https://www.error-ref.com/improper-alloy-mix/ It could be normal Environmental toning damage. Nickels are made of Cupro-Nickel 75% copper/25% nickel so it contains copper. The copper will turn darker generally when exposed to the elements or a harsh chemical however if you look more to the right of the face it has more of a stain/spill/dirt layer on top of the coin rather than the coin toning. If you look about half way down this thread there were some posted examples also of metal detector coins including nickels to get a general idea of how they look after the environment exposure.
